Question about making jewelry with clear resin...?

I have been making pendants with wood tiles and then covering them with clear resin that I bought at a craft store. As you know, most of these resin products come in two separate parts and when mixed, they can be applied and then harden to create a glass like finish. Usually, I have no trouble with this product. However, if I don't mix the two parts in exact equal measure, the pendent may not dry completely and is very slightly sticky when finished. One of the bottles of the resin mix is labeled ';hardener.'; If I rub just a small amount of this hardener onto the finished pendant, do you think it will counteract the stickiness and finish properly? If not, is there a way to get rid of this problem aside from making brand new pendants?Question about making jewelry with clear resin...?
First, the type of resin you're describing is an epoxy resin (mixed one to one).

The other main kind of craft resin is polyester resin (mixed a few drops of catalyst/hardener to a much larger amount of resin), and that type can stay sticky on the surface which dried next to the air normally, so it's usually used for casting in molds or using between sheets of fiberglass.

Epoxy resins aren't supposed to be cast or layered more than 1/8'; at a time (up to a total of 1/2';)... when doing more than one layer, each layer has to be cured before the next one is added. Don't know if that could be your problem though.

Wood can be a problem too since if it hasn't been sealed it may always contain a bit of residual moisture (which can make bubbles at least) and it's porous.

So if you're using bare wood tiles, you might want to seal them first (permanent white glue thinned 3 or 4 to 1 with water is probably easiest), then let dry thoroughly before they come in contact with the resin.

The other thing is that there are specific conditions required for the best cure of resins... humidity and temperature (as well as proper mixing proportions, mixing, and applying).

Here some info about those issues from my site:

Work in reasonably well ventilated area

...do not mix or pour in direct sunlight

...best results, temperatures between 68掳 and 80掳

...best hardness, pour and cure at humidity below 50%

...mix up only the amount you'll use in 20 minutes or less (...for larger areas, best to have a helper to make new batches)

Mixing......(keep capped tightly when not in use)

...pour resin in one cup and hardener in another cup (equal amounts)...

...then pour one part into the other part

...mix very thoroughly for 1-2 min (for clearest result)... scraping the sides and bottom of container continuously

...some people recommend pouring into a new cup (then mixing 30 sec. more), so any unmixed liquid in bottom will stay in first cup

......uncured 鈥榮ticky鈥? spots will result from any part of the liquid which is not thoroughly mixed (can't chemically react, so won't cure)

........in that case, scrape the spots from the cured surface... scrub well with acetone or rubbing alcohol... then re-pour entire surface

Allow item to cure in a warm, draft free and non-dusty room ....away from children, pets, activity, fans, etc.

......protect resin surface from dust %26amp; pet hair during curing by placing a cardboard box over the item, for example

...leave undisturbed for at least 24 hrs.

......sets up in 3-5 hrs, depending on temp %26amp; humidity

......cures to touch in 12 hrs.

......full cure in 48-72 hrs ...for example, at 80潞 (4 hr set up, 60 hr full cure), or at 70潞 (5 hr set up, 72 hr full cure)

There's more info on using epoxy resins and polyester resins on that page, if you want to check it out:

http://glassattic.com/polymer/other_mate鈥?/a>

You can always add more epoxy resin over epoxy resin (or over polyester resin, though no polyester over epoxy), and/or scrape or sand it down first to get rid of any stickiness presuming you do everything else right the final time, I guess.

HTH,

Diane B.Question about making jewelry with clear resin...?
The resin you're mentioning is in two parts, 1 is the resin itself then the other 1 is a hardener combine the two will result to a hard resin finish with a glossy look not adding enough of 1 will cause it to be to hard or to soft.Try doing what you think will work if not i am sad to say you have to do all your work over again. p.s. the stickiness is the result of not enough hardener being mix. always make sure the two parts starts off equal.
Try putting it under a heat lamp , sometimes the humidity may take it longer to dry ;)))

Is there a recipe to make your own clear casting resin? it's so expensive to buy?

It is expensive, I know. But I don't believe there's really a do it yourself recipe, there's too many ingredients involved to do this. If this is for something very small, for something like a sealer you COULD use clear fingernail polish. But that's if you're really in a pinch. But it would work. But for ';casting';, no, I think you have to purchase the actual products.

Search dickblick.com, they have casting supplies %26amp; are the best prices around.

What kind of clear resin can you use on an outdoor table that won't turn yellow from the sun?

I am making a pool side table with a beaded top. I need to cover the beads with a clear resin. I have checked Envirotex lite %26amp; Klear Kote that they use on bars, both say not to use outside. The UV rays will yellow them. There has to be somehting to put on an ouside table top that won't yellow or amber with age. Both the Fiberglass boat shops %26amp; the Envirotex Co. sent me to the bar top people. Has anyone made anything like this %26amp; used a clear resin on it?What kind of clear resin can you use on an outdoor table that won't turn yellow from the sun?
I would suggest a water based gloss polyurethane. Many, thin coats. I would recommend 8-10 coats.

Update - Water based poly dries so fast you should be able to easily put on 10 coats a day. You could put on 100 coats if you wanted to.. Just keep going until you feel satisfied.

I suppose another option is you could take a sheet of glass and with a torch (Probably MAPP or Acetylene) melt the glass into the beads, depending on the type of beads you are using. What kind of clear resin can you use on an outdoor table that won't turn yellow from the sun?
ODD that you were sent away by a Boat Mfg. That would be my first suggestion, Fiberglass resin, seeing as how much it has to endure applied to a boat.

One answer states check things such as UV rated resins, and perhaps MSDS sheets would offer some clue?

No offense at all, but it seems as if more research is needed. The issue certainly is the yellowing, and even outdoor bars aren't involved in the critical nature that implies.

or maybe use any resin then buy a clear anti-uv top coat.
Resin is probably not the way to go as a top finish.

If you asked for a resin at ';boat people'; it's probably the reason they turned you to the ';bar people';

Resins are not used on the ';brightwork'; you will find on boats

Go back to the ';boat people'; , ask about a marine varnish %26amp; see what they can recommend for your purpose .

Spar varnish withstands weather %26amp; is used on spruce , masts %26amp; spars as well as mahogany %26amp; teak for interior %26amp; exterior use ....pine? might want to rethink a glossy finish.

Mc Kloskeys is an over the counter ';spar varnish'; which is OK

Better stuff at marine supply.

Would not use polyurethane ';varnish ';, it will get scabby %26amp; is tough to redo.

In any event ,check the cans of whatever you use to see if it is ';food safe';

Thermal Conductivity in Clear Resin ??

I think this is the term i am looking for !!

Basically, laptops create a lot of heat , so if i sit a piece of clear resin(1inch thick) between my self and my laptop, would it stop the heat passing through or at least slow it down.

Thankyou.Thermal Conductivity in Clear Resin ??
Well, yeah! The burning question is what's going to happen to your laptop if you retard the flow of heat away from it? Your laptop contains millions of transistors, all of which generate heat and rely on thermal dissapation for cooling. That's why it makes your legs warm -- it's cooling itself. Doing what you suggest may cool your lap but overheat your laptop.Thermal Conductivity in Clear Resin ??
Plastics (clear resins) are usually classified as insulators, so they would have relatively low thermal conductivity, and a sheet should tend to insulate your legs from the heat of the laptop.

Of course it depends on the thickness, too, and the exact type of plastic you use.

Where can i buy cheap resin is the us? Clear epoxy resin. The cheapest i can find is 26$ for 32 ounces. and that is a lottt. also any creative ideas of things to put in my necklaces?Resin Jewelry and clear resin?
You can buy clear epoxy resin at craft, hobby and art supply stores, or online of course, and you can also buy somewhat larger amounts at some hardware stores (sold as ';bartop resins';) and online. They aren't ';really cheap'; anywhere though.**

You can put anything into epoxy resin (or polyester resin though it gets a bit hotter while curing) that won't melt, is color-fast so won't bleed, is completely dry, and isn't porous --porous items like paper and things that aren't colorfast can be sealed though before placing in the resin.

You can read all about using epoxy resin on this page at my site if you're interested:

    http://glassattic.com/polymer/other_mate鈥?/a>

There are also brand names listed there, as well as info on application, etc., etc., and also links to other lessons.

NOTE that epoxy resins are not the same as polyester resins, though brands of both will be found at craft/hobby/art stores. They have to be used differently (in *deep* molds or not, for example), they have different ';toxic'; ratings, they're mixed in different proportions, etc.

**Polyester resins are a bit cheaper by volume than epoxy resins, though as I said they're different.

    There are also other clear liquids that can be used instead of 2-part resins when making certain kinds of things though... for some of those, check out the the page linked to above and click on the category called ';Simulations of Resin.';

You can put pretty much anything in the resin. Metals, plastics, magazine clippings, bugs, flowers, leaves, etc. Anything printed by a home inkjet printer onto regular paper has a tendancy to smudge and run. Crepe or tissue paper is great for slightly tinting the resin.

There are a number of brands of ';epoxy'; resin, which is what you're probably using if you're mixing it one to one (polyester resin is also two-part but those are usually mixed one small amount of catalyst to a large amount of the second part --some polyester resins are also called ';casting resins.';).

Epoxy resins can be purchased at craft stores, hobby stores, and I think at art supply stores, as well as online. Other places are ';plastics'; stores (like Tap Plastics), and one less expensive brand can be bought at many hardware stores.

Some of the brand names of epoxy resins are:

Read the instructions. Sounds like you have added too much hardener. If you are using small amounts then this is critical. Too much hardener sends the mixture off quickly before it has a chance to flow fully into the mould. Do not be too eager to open the mould. Let it cure. Do not assume that the product you have now is the same as the previous one. Formulas do differ from brand to brand.

Thanks for responding.Cast clear casting resin into a silicon mold?
There are clear resins (thermoset plastics) that can be cast into silicone molds. Not all resins and silicone types are compatible, though, you need to check with the supplier.

There are 4 readily available plastic types that produce clear castings: Polyester, Acrylic, Epoxy and Polyurethane. Each has its own applications, pros and cons.

Where can I find clear casting resin?

In Salt Lake City Utah if that helps. Would it be a hardware store? Also how easy is it to use?Where can I find clear casting resin?
If you want a *casting* resin (to use in a mold), you'll generally want to use a polyester resin that's sold for arts and crafts (not for making fiberglass). The other main type of craft resin is epoxy resin, but it's mostly used for coating things and pouring into *shallow* cells, not in molds.

There is one brand of ';epoxy resin'; however that has been tweaked so that it can be cast into molds (small amounts anyway) without having the problems that regular epoxy resins can have when they're poured thicker than 1/2'; in total (may not be as clear when thick)... that brand is called Easy Cast Clear Casting Epoxy Resin. It has the disadvantage though of being a bit flexible if it's not very thick and having a softer surface than regular epoxy resins... those problems will show up more if the cured item is later exposed to warmth (even from wearing on the body).

Easy Cast is the ';safest'; of the casting resins though for lungs, etc.... regular epoxies require some ventilation and care, and polyester resins require a lot of ventilation and stink quite a bit.

You can buy various kinds and brands of resin at craft stores, hobby stores, and art supply stores (as well as online). You can also find them at some hardware stores (particularly the smaller ones like Ace, etc.)

You can usually buy ';bar top resin'; at even larger hardware/home improvement stores as well... those are the same as regular epoxy resins but will come in somewhat larger containers for a little less money by volume.

If you want to check out some of the brand names for all those resins --plus how to mix them, apply them, cure them, etc.-- check out this page at my site for lots of info, lessons, etc:

What kind of glue keeps clear epoxy resin from yellowing?

I noticed that every time I use super glue to paste a picture down. Let it dry and then coat with the epoxy resin...the resin turns really yellow. I notice that it will do that with fast drying glues....

Do you know what is in the super glue that makes it do that? And what kind of fast drying glue will keep the resin from yellowing?

Thanks in advance. :)What kind of glue keeps clear epoxy resin from yellowing?
First, two-part *polyester* resins themselves (also called ';casting'; resins, like Cast 'N Craft) won't yellow as easily as hard-surface epoxy resins will (Envirotex Lite, etc.), but they'll both do it --especially over time from too much UV light, or from too high a heat while wet or while curing (try for 65-75 degrees), or even afterward if heated too high.

Also, *epoxy* resins can yellow (or ';amber';) just if they're more than 1/2'; in total thickness (...they can be poured no more than 1/8'; at a time).

You could try using Varathane (Diamond Elite, Gloss, water-washup --an acrylic finish for bare wood) instead if you're using only a thin layer of clear resin since Varathane has a UV protectant in it and acrylic finishes can also take some heat after curing.

As for gluing items down before adding resin, usually a permanent ';white glue'; is used ---but it can be a really *thin* coat (rub most off with finger), or even just a tiny dot or two, to speed up drying time ...those applications shouldn't take long to dry especially if they're in a reasonably warm area, or where there's some air circulation.

....Some papers and other porous materials require sealing with diluted white glue (4 to 1 water to glue) then drying so they won't become transparent when the resin is added or create extra air bubbles though... when you add the little bits of glue to those the backs of those surfaces, they might take a tad longer to dry --don't know.

You could also try holding the pictures down with a bit of ';spray adhesive'; on the back of the paper and see what happened, I guess.

I don't know why instant glues would cause the resin to yellow by themselves though, but probably have some chemical in them that reacts with the resin (unlike white glues would).

There's more info on both epoxy and polyester resins, and how to use them in various ways for casting in bottle tops, or for coating, etc., on this page of my site if you want to check it out:

    http://glassattic.com/polymer/other_mate鈥?/a>

Diane B.What kind of glue keeps clear epoxy resin from yellowing?
The owner of an epoxy products company told me a while ago that all clear epoxy putties will eventually yellow. I know that superglue and epoxy glue can influence eachother and to me it sounds like the superglue is accelerating the yellowing process.

Have you tried leaving the superglue a few days alone before applying the epoxy?

What is the reason for the epoxy by the way? Are you making something like a ';glass'; cover for the picture? Like you sometimes see with pendants? If you are only using the superglue to keep the picture in place while you are applying epoxy you could also experiment with other glues. For instance elmers (roughen the surface you apply it too) or a rubber glue.

Looking for a cheap clear polyester resin or liquid plastic to use for large crafts?

I want to make a large 4 foot by 3 foot square about 2 inches thick of clear polyester resin or something similar. I have never used anything like this before... but looking up the resin online it is very expensive and I will need quite a bit. I am looking for a place to get it cheap or a cheap alternative. Thanks!Looking for a cheap clear polyester resin or liquid plastic to use for large crafts?
    There ain't no such thing.

Depending on what you are embedding, you might need a 'low-temperature' curing plastic resin to prevent damage to the embedded object.

ALL these resins are expensive unless bought in 'bulk' amounts, and even then they are NOT cheap.Looking for a cheap clear polyester resin or liquid plastic to use for large crafts?
Do you want to carve it or encase something?

If carve, take a look at cast acrylic (not extruded, which shows strain cracking after drilling, much less carving) which should be available in 2'; thickness because of use for bullet proof windows.

Buying resin in 55 gallon drums is about the only way to go cheaper if you have been looking at 1 pint cans.

I want to pour a clear resin on top of glass to secure bottle caps in place. Do you have any suggestions?

Please respond if you answer yes to ANY of these below:

    done it before?

    have a suggestion?

    know of a good how-to?

have a picture of a finished project?

have done the same with wine corks?

Thanks!I want to pour a clear resin on top of glass to secure bottle caps in place. Do you have any suggestions?
Have done clear resin on a tabletop, with buttons. Not sure about if it would stick to glass. Glue bottle cap to surface first, so they don't move/float. Just a drop or two of super glue to hold them there.

Do it on a day with low humidity. mix slowly Pour slowly So you don't get bubbles in the resin. do about half an inch wait a couple of days for it to set then do a second pour if you need to. It shrinks a little as it cures. Resin is fun stuff. If you've not dome it before, just follow the instructions for mixing. And you might want to do a small piece first before tackling a large job..I want to pour a clear resin on top of glass to secure bottle caps in place. Do you have any suggestions?
So I just finished two glass tables using a clear resin, one adhering bottle caps, the other wine corks. Both worked flawlessly, acting as a glue. I highly recommend this method as long as you are meticulous and careful and have good ventilation.

A problem I see with bottle caps is the hollow underneath. Resin sticks to glass just fine, but the glass has to be very clean (soap and water, rinse, denatured alcohol).

If you didn't want to encase the caps, then you might look at E6000 with is a silicone adhesive that is self leveling, works well with glass and is pretty stinky. http://users.ticnet.com/mikefirth/glues.鈥?/a>

You will want to do tests on small pieces of glass.

I'm not sure if this is what you want? Junkitz do some clear rounds, squares, buttons and tabz (sic) in association with Tim Holtz which can be altered using Ranger inks. The trade supplier Scrapbookworld had some but have just announced they are closing down and I see the stock is sold out. Try searching - Junkitz Tim Holtz mosaic - to find a stockist.

There is a product called Bonda clear casting resin available from some craft shops. It comes with a separate liquid catalyst, mixing cup and measure in tins of 250g, 500g or 1kg.

A rectangular self releasing mould is an optional extra.

I hope you are not planning to use insects - so cruel. There are lots of other possibilities.Where can I buy clear resin like the ones you see with scorpions or insects suspended in them please.?
You want a 2-part ';casting'; resin for things that will be thicker than 1/2';. (Those are polyester resins, not epoxy resins, btw).

One of the most common brand of polyester resin is Cast 'N Craft which should be available at most craft, hobby and art supply stores (epoxy resins will also be available--some common brands of those are Envirotex, Ultra Glo, etc.).

Those stores may also have molds to use with the polyester resins, but you can use other very smooth silicone items as well like ice cube trays, etc.

There should be instructions in the box telling you how to suspend things in the resin (in a mold) by creating a layer, waiting a while, adding the item, then adding more resin, etc. The timing will be important though.

Someone else mentioned another kind of resin above too, the kind called floral setting resins which often hold the stems of artificial flowers in place inside a vase and resemble water, but those won't ever get as hard as the two I mentioned above so unless you'll be keeping your resin and bugs in a container (vase, glass jar, etc.) permanently, you wouldn't want to use it.

You might also want to check out this page at my site on all those types of 2-part resin... how to color them, mix them, etc.:

    http://glassattic.com/polymer/other_mate鈥?/a>

(...look under Epoxy for the colorants, etc., if you're interested since they're the same for polyesters as epoxies)

I really like to use Castin' Craft brand fror my pendants and keychains. It's found at most craft stores, like Michael's, and you can also find it at various places online, including eBay. It is a two part resin, using just a few drops of catalyst to get it to harden. Castin' Craft also sells translucent dyes, opaque dyes, molds, and just about anything else you need for casting resin.
Hobbycraft sell a product that you could use. It's aimed at people who want to use a vase and artificial flowers and make the vase hold the flowers upright and look like water.

Guess this will do the trick.

How do you remove a metal badge from a clear resin display? ?

Many years ago I had my military badge embedded in a clear resin mold for display. Is there a way I can safely remove it and return it to its original condition? How do you remove a metal badge from a clear resin display? ?
Removing the badge would be very difficult.

If you try to cut away the resin the medal could be damaged in the process

Is it possible to purchase a copy badge?

You would need records of the metal being awarded. How do you remove a metal badge from a clear resin display? ?
The resin has penetrated every crevice of the batch and it is chemical set. You can't melt it off. If the badge is pretty smooth with little relief, then you might be able saw around the badge a short distance from the edge then stand it on edge and use a chisel or knife to split off the face. It may be adhered to the badge and not release.

Where can i get clear resin that dries solid so i can make a table top?

i am making a table using recycled computers for my A2 product design course and want to encase the motherboards in to the top, i would crush them up and sprinkle them into the resin so the resin sandwiches them. but i am struggling to find any resin that will dry hard and clear. Any help would be great, and i think i need about 20l if that's any help?Where can i get clear resin that dries solid so i can make a table top?
The Eloxite Corporation in Wheatland WY sells a product called Polytex. It is a resin that dries and sets up as hard as glass. It is used for bar tops and resists all kinds of heat and abuse. Their phone number is (307) 322-3050. If noone is there a answering machine will take your order. Good luck.Where can i get clear resin that dries solid so i can make a table top?
You can go to or visit Sherwin Williams paint supply store, they can order it for you. I know that Lowe's carries a similar product. If I recall the price at SWilliams was around $85.00. It works very well but I can't recall the name. I was ordering paint and had mentioned to the salesman I wanted to do something similar to yours on a vintage bar counter top. He ordered it and it was in within 48 hours. Hope that helps
In that volume, you will spend a fortune. To spend a smaller fortune, look up 'Plastic Suppliers' on Google near your location and call and ask about sources for clear acrylic resin in bulk containers.

  • How to encapsulate Bugs or other Stuff in clear Resin, epoxy or similar?

I need to know what material they use to encapsulate Bugs. Clear stuff. I want to encapsulate something that I have for someone as a gift but don't know what exactly it is that they use. It sort of preserves it for ever. So if you know what it is or where I can get it,, please let me know. ThanksHow to encapsulate Bugs or other Stuff in clear Resin, epoxy or similar?
Go to the art department of any major craft store like michael's, JoAnn's, or Hobby Lobby. You will find casting resin that even has pictures of what you are describing on the label. There are very detailed instructions on the label, make sure you follow them to the letter as different brands differ slightly, which is why I am NOT giving you step-by-steps here. Have fun!

How long will something cast in clear resin last?

It should last indefinitely, especially if you keep it out of the elements.

What's the difference between Envirotex lite gloss and Easy Cast Clear resin?

I want to make some pendants but do you have to use the easy cast resin or can you use something like envirotex to make it? They look the same but are they? Thank you! What's the difference between Envirotex lite gloss and Easy Cast Clear resin?
Both of the resins you mentioned are ';epoxy'; resins (the other main type of resin used for art/craft is ';polyester'; resin).

';Easy Cast'; is a fairly new epoxy resin that's a bit different from most regular epoxy resins (like Envirotex Lite, Ultra Glo, etc.).

Easy Cast has been formulated to be clearer when it's cast in molds deeper than 1/4'; or so than regular epoxy resin would be, and it has little or no odor... however, Easy Cast also cures a bit soft on the surface, and it's somewhat flexible if it's not really thick (those qualities show up more if the piece is warmed later--next to the body, in a pocket, etc).

So generally, if you want to ';cast'; resin in a mold (with a craft-type resin), you'll want to use a polyester resin. It will be clear everywhere it was NOT in contact with the air while curing which in a mold will usually be the back side of the cast piece. Polyester resins** are less ';good'; for one's lungs and skin though than epoxy resins.

    **brands of polyester resin include:

Clear Polyester Casting Resin, with Catalyst (by Castin' Craft, ETI)

Lam-A-Cast Crystal Clear Casting Resin, with catalyst (same manuf.?)

Aristocrat's Casting Resin (not Aristocrat's Liquid Glass, which is an epoxy resin)

Clear-Lite Casting Resin (from Tap Plastics)

If you want to cast in a shallow mold however (probably with a release), or if you want to fill up a small ';cell'; permanently (e.g., in a tiny frame, over a picture, etc), or if you want to very-thickly coat something with a high gloss finish, then you'll want to use a regular epoxy resin. It will cure hard and clear on the surfaces exposed to the air, and maybe non-air surfaces too. (There would be no reason in those situations to have to accept the disadvantages of Easy Cast.)

There's loads more info on both types of resin, how to mix and apply them, color them, embed things in them, links to video lessons, etc., on this page at my site if you want to check it out:

How can I clear resin gas out of the room?

I use envirotex lite varnish resin a lot in my work room, it doesn't really have a smell but after a while I can smell of sort of ammoniaish fumes gasing off the curing resin. The pamphlet doesn't warn about fumes but indigestions or eye contact.....im not sure just how dangerous the fumes are, but it does make feel weird so now I need to clear the fumes out of my room...opening a window isn't enough...
